Advantages and Disadvantages of Internet Privacy

Internet privacy entails the mandate and right to personal privacy regarding the storage, provision of information to third parties, repurposing, and the display of information of an individual through the internet. The internet is used for various purposes by many people like social media platforms. People are bettering their lives from using the internet in several ways such as pursuing online courses, communication, and shopping. However, the need for internet privacy is critical. This essay looks at the advantages and disadvantages of internet privacy by looking at the key points that authenticate internet roles among people.

Advantages of Internet Privacy

The primary advantage of intent privacy is that it enables people to remain anonymous if they choose to (Sicari et al., 2015). Nevertheless, the simple procedure of logging to the internet can facilitate internet service providers to identify a person. By establishing internet privacy measures, people will freely pursue their interests without any danger. Besides, internet privacy protects any person that is vulnerable to exploitation. Consider the case of a child who accesses the internet without or with the guardian’s approval. Therefore, by improving internet privacy levels, it will become possible to guard such children against the inappropriate contents above their age level. Also, people may take advantage of them since at their age they are incapable of judging things morally.

Equally, internet privacy encourages freedom of expression and speech (Sicari et al., 2015). A critical thing that the internet never fails in is that it provides different groups, forums, and sites where individuals can virtually participate in topic debates and discussions. The comments are always transparent and open, even when talking about complicated matters like political concerns. Hence, when people feel that they will not be judged based on their advice or observation by others, they feel more willing to share their insights. It is through sharing of ideas that people gain more of wisdom. Freedom also involves posting whatever an individual desires outside their politics, religion, and other ethnic laws.

Similarly, internet privacy encourages freedom of the press. In each country, there are major companies that control the traditional media and digital media resources that people rely on for daily information. These companies can thus control how specific nation thinks and feel concerning various topics. Internet privacy thus allows for the individual press to cover their stories in alternative forms so that civilians can get complete stories instead of the one side presented by the major media. As a result, internet privacy allows for any person to have a chance of their voice instead of adhering to voice dictated by others.

Also, internet privacy encourages innovation. The Internet provides a platform where people can learn and develop ideas they desire (Sicari et al., 2015). Ideas can thus be quickly looked up and tested to determine their feasibility suppose any value can be extracted from them. Besides, the massive learning tools like database resources assist people in becoming innovators and entrepreneurs. Without any privacy, innovation would be limited since any individual could access and steal ideas that are potential before they could be achieved. Typically, when there is no judgment passed in a matter, the equal playing field created will have innovation as the victor.

Besides, it becomes easier to ignore any bothersome information. With the various internet privacy policies available on internet sites, there are multiple ways that a person can opt-out of negative influence bothering them. For example, social networks allow people to unfollow any person that causes trouble without alerting them. Besides, specific sources of information can be blocked.

Disadvantages of internet privacy

The major challenge in internet privacy is that it makes it simple for individuals to steal intellectual properties of others (Cecere et al., 2015). It is a common feature that is seen in writing and photography. Stealing someone’s writing will only need copying and pasting their texts and publishing them on new platforms. In photography, an image is saved off the internet and reposted. Besides, with the unknown nature of many internet sites, it would be difficult to identify and locate these offenders.

Moreover, internet privacy creates the room to abuse others. By looking at the commenting section on posts, it is evident that people do not hide their intentions. When a person disagrees with any posted content, internet privacy policies allow them to be eligible for their comments (Cecere et al., 2015). Therefore, it gives people a chance to become intolerant and abusive. Harsh criticism is often displayed, hatefulness, and even threatening messages which is all due to people hiding behind anonymous identities.

Besides, it is difficult to get to understand and know other people. Typically, internet privacy policies settings allow individuals to live lies and a double life. They can remain the same person to their family, employer, and friends but assume different personality and character online. For this reason, it is hard to trust people on the internet. For example, people who hire ghost workers post job vacancy with authentic profiles. During pay, they can either stop communication or block the worker from any way of reaching them.

Internet privacy allows people to engage in identity theft (Cecere et al., 2015). Identity theft, which is assuming someone else’s identity, is becoming a rapid crime. It is attributed to the internet privacy levels that exist that can never eliminate this issue. In most cases, someone will assume the identity of other online personnel to steal goods or money from the friends or family of that person. Besides, sometimes internet privacy can lead to actual mistaken identities since several people have common names in the contemporary world.

Internet privacy allows for the spread of fake information (Weber, 2015). There is usually not trust in most internet information. Any information that should be treated as a fact on the internet must be thoroughly verified to establish its authenticity. Several sites provide fake news and false information taken by some people as real. These sites aim to spread propaganda or make general public engagements.

In summary, internet privacy is a factor that has its pros and cons. The benefits that are related to internet privacy include allowing people to remain anonymous, freedom of expression, encouraging innovation and ignorance of any bothersome information. Internet privacy thus will enable people to stay positive on various aspects of their lives. On the other hand, it can be disadvantageous in several ways. It makes it easier to steal online information and properties of other people, creates room for using abusive language, encourages identity theft, and the spread of fake news. Since internet sites are unknown, people use them as platforms to convey their negativity or do unethical practices. They take advantage of the fact that these sites cannot be easily traced back to them as they may create fake profiles.
